It partially dissolves polyvinyl acetate but does not dissolve cellulose acetate, polystyrene, or polymethyl methacrylate.

It also acts as a stabilizer for latex paints, an evaporation inhibitor for aircraft coatings, and a surface modifier for high-temperature baking enamels. As an additive for coatings and resins, it functions as a surfactant, defoamer, antifreeze, antistatic agent, and component in rubber and adhesives. In organic synthesis, it participates as an intermediate in producing various organic compounds.
