Trifluoromethanesulfonic Acid (CAS 1493-13-6) is a highly active organic strong acid. It is a colorless to light yellow transparent liquid at room temperature with a strong pungent odor. Its molecular formula is CHF₃O₃S and its molecular weight is 150.08.
Trifluoromethanesulfonic Acid has a melting point of -40℃, a boiling point of 162℃, and a density of 1.9 g/cm³ (20℃). It is easily soluble in water and methanol, exhibits strong hygroscopicity, and smokes when exposed to air.

Uses:

Trifluoromethanesulfonic Acid is widely used in organic synthesis as a catalyst for reactions such as Friedel-Crafts alkylation/acylation, Diels-Alder cycloaddition, esterification, and Aldol condensation. It can replace traditional strong acids to reduce by-product formation. It is also used for preparing intermediates like trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride and trifluoromethanesulfonic esters (e.g., silicone esters) for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and polymer materials.
In medicine and biochemical engineering, it is involved in synthesizing drugs such as nucleosides, antibiotics, and steroids, as well as in silicone rubber modification and protein modification.

Method of Preparation:
- Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid is usually obtained by reacting trifluoromethanesulfonyl fluoride with water by the equation CF3SO2F + H2O -> CF3SO3H.
