Properties:
5-Chloropyridine-2-carboxylic acid is a white to light yellow crystalline solid with a peculiar odor. It is soluble in some organic solvents such as ethanol, dimethyl sulfoxide and dichloromethane, but is less soluble in water.

Uses:
5-Chloropyridine-2-carboxylic acid is an important organic intermediate widely used in the synthesis of other organic compounds.

Method of Preparation:
The method of preparation of 5-Chloropyridine-2-carboxylic acid involves the use of 2-chloro-5-methylpyridine (formula I) as the raw material and trichloroisocyanuric acid (formula III) under specific conditions. The reaction may be initiated at atmospheric pressure or micro-negative pressure at temperatures between 80 and 200°C through the use of a chemical initiator or light source. Following the reaction, filtration will yield 2-chloro-5-chloromethylpyridine, with the reaction formula presented below. The present invention offers a safer alternative to traditional chlorination methods by eliminating the use of solvents and reducing the generation of wastewater and acidic exhaust gas. Furthermore, the process avoids the need for neutralization and water washing, which are typically required in chlorination.
