Hexadecyl-D-Maltoside (CAS No.: 98064-96-1) is a long-chain alkyl glycoside compound, which is composed of a hexadecyl hydrophobic chain and a maltose hydrophilic group connected by a β-glycosidic bond. Its molecular formula is C₂₈H₅₄O₁₁, with a molecular weight of 566.72 g/mol. It is a white to off-white solid powder at room temperature. In addition, Hexadecyl-D-Maltoside has both hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity, is slightly soluble in water, and is easily soluble in polar organic solvents such as methanol and ethanol.

As a non-ionic detergent, Hexadecyl-D-Maltoside can gently dissolve cell membranes, selectively extract membrane proteins and maintain their natural conformation. It is widely used in the purification and structural analysis of complex membrane proteins such as photosynthetic systems and G protein-coupled receptors (such as rhodopsin). Its low CMC property enables it to stabilize protein structure at low concentrations and inhibit intermolecular aggregation, making it particularly suitable for labile membrane proteins and peptides.
Industrial and scientific research assistance
In cosmetics, it can be used as an emulsifier to enhance product stability; in the laboratory, it can be used for liposome preparation, protein-lipid interaction research, and as an additive in chromatographic analysis.

The compound needs to be sealed and stored in a cool, dry place at 4°C, away from oxidants and high temperatures. As a nonionic surfactant, it has low toxicity, but high concentrations may be slightly irritating to the skin and mucous membranes.
