Tert-Butyl Carbamate is white to slightly yellow needle-shaped crystals or powder at room temperature, odorless, with a melting point of 105–108°C, a boiling point of 196°C, and a density of 0.99 g/cm³. It is slightly soluble in water, easily soluble in organic solvents such as methanol, acetone, and dichloromethane, and slightly soluble in petroleum ether. Its vapor pressure is extremely low (0.4 mmHg, 25°C), and it is stable in the air, but it needs to be sealed and stored in a dry environment.

Organic synthesis:
As an amino protecting group reagent for amino acids, Tert-Butyl Carbamate is widely used in the synthesis of peptides and drug intermediates. For example, N-Boc protected aniline derivatives can be prepared by coupling with aryl halides under palladium catalysis. The protecting group can be easily removed under acidic conditions (such as trifluoroacetic acid) to avoid the destruction of the amino group during the reaction.
Medical field:
It is used to prepare antibiotics, antiviral drugs and chiral compounds. For example, in the synthesis of the anticancer drug docetaxel, tert-butyl carbamate can protect the amino group to achieve selective reaction.
