Differences in Chemical Structure
Methyl methacrylate (MMA) and methyl acrylate (MA) differ significantly in their molecular structures. MMA contains an alcohol ether chain, while methyl acrylate lacks this structure.
Differences in Properties
Methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate exhibit substantial differences in their properties. MMA readily polymerizes at low temperatures, is poorly soluble in water, but soluble in common organic solvents. Methyl acrylate, on the other hand, has good water solubility and is miscible with water under certain conditions. Furthermore, due to the alcohol ether chain structure of the methyl methacrylate molecule, its oligomers readily form gels, while methyl acrylate does not have this problem.
Differences in Applications
Because of the differences in polymerization properties between MMA and methyl acrylate, their applications also differ. MMA, due to its tendency to gel, is often used in the preparation of medical materials and small tubing. Methyl acrylate, however, is widely used in resins, coatings, inks, and adhesives.
