What is the difference between EPS and polystyrene?

Polystyrene is a common thermoplastic polymer made from the monomer styrene. It comes in various forms, with Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) being one of the most well - known and widely used.

In terms of physical appearance and structure, polystyrene in its general solid form is hard, brittle, and transparent or translucent. It has a relatively dense molecular arrangement. In contrast, EPS is a lightweight, white, and highly porous material. EPS is produced by pre - expanding polystyrene beads with a blowing agent. These beads expand to many times their original size and are then fused together to form the final EPS product, resulting in a structure filled with numerous small air pockets.

Their properties also diverge significantly. General polystyrene has good stiffness and is often used for applications where a rigid structure is required, such as in some plastic utensils or CD cases. However, it lacks good impact resistance. EPS, on the other hand, has excellent cushioning properties due to its porous structure. It can absorb and disperse impacts effectively, making it ideal for packaging fragile items like electronics and glassware. Additionally, EPS has great thermal insulation capabilities because the air pockets within it slow down heat transfer, which is not a standout feature of regular polystyrene.

In applications, while polystyrene is used in a wide range of injection - molded products, EPS is predominantly found in the packaging industry for its shock - absorbing qualities and in the construction industry as a thermal insulation material for walls, roofs, and floors.
