Potassium formate is a white crystalline powder of flakes with water absorbing performance and slight odor. It is soluble in water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol.

Potassium formate in liquid solution form does not have a single, sharp boiling point because it is an aqueous solution rather than a pure compound. The boiling point depends on:
- Concentration of the potassium formate solution
- Atmospheric pressure
For a typical 50–90% potassium formate solution, the boiling point ranges approximately between 108°C and 120°C (226°F – 248°F) at standard atmospheric pressure. As the concentration increases, the boiling point rises due to the salt's colligative effect.

Potassium formate liquid is mainly used to prepare water-containing oil well filling fluids.
