Triethylene Glycol (TEG) is a colorless, odorless, and slightly sweet viscous liquid that belongs to the class of polyhydric alcohols. Its molecular structure contains three ethylene glycol units, giving it excellent water solubility, hygroscopicity, and chemical stability.
Dehydrating Agent in Natural Gas and Oil Extraction
This is the primary industrial application of TEG. During natural gas and crude oil extraction and processing, the raw gas usually contains a large amount of water (both free water and water vapor). If not removed, this moisture can cause pipeline corrosion, hydrate blockages, or affect the quality of subsequent processing products.
TEG is the preferred solvent for natural gas dehydration due to its strong water absorption capacity and high boiling point (about 288°C):
- Dehydration Principle: In a "TEG dehydration unit," wet natural gas comes into counter-current contact with lean TEG (low water content) inside the absorption tower. The TEG selectively absorbs the water from the natural gas, turning into rich TEG (high water content).
- Regeneration Cycle: The rich TEG is sent to the regeneration tower, where it is heated. Thanks to its high boiling point, the water vaporizes while TEG itself does not boil easily. After water removal, the regenerated lean TEG is cycled back into the absorption tower for reuse.
- Advantages: High dehydration efficiency, low solvent loss, and relatively reasonable regeneration energy consumption, making it well-suited for large-scale natural gas processing.
