Formamide, an organic compound with the molecular formula CH3NO, is a colorless, transparent liquid with a slight ammonia smell, which is the raw material for synthesizing medicine, spices, dyes, etc. It is also used as a solvent for the extraction of synthetic fibers, plastics processing, and the production of lignocellulosic inks.
Formamide Solubility
- Solubility: insoluble in ether and chlorinated solvents, slightly soluble in benzene, miscible with water, methanol, ethanol, acetic acid, acetone, dioxane, ethylene glycol, phenol, and low-grade esters. It can dissolve casein, but not albumin.
- Formamide also solubilizes casein, glucose, zein, gelatin, animal glue, resins, starch, lignin, acetate fibers, nylon, and certain inorganic salts, chlorides of copper, lead, zinc, tin, cobalt, iron, aluminum, and nickel, certain sulfates, and nitrates.
Formamide Chemical Properties
The hydrolysis of formamide is slow at room temperature, and can be accelerated by raising the temperature or by adding acids or bases. In the presence of a catalyst, heating to below 35 ℃ can decompose hydrogen cyanide. Formamide has two active functional groups, i.e., carbonyl group and amide group, which are easy to react chemically and generate many nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds. Formamide can react with inorganic acids to produce formic acid and ammonium salt. In the presence of a catalyst, it can react with organic halides or alcohols to produce formic acid esters. It can also react with β-diketones, β-iminones, aliphatic couplings, aromatic couplings, and heterocyclic couplings. It can combine with cobalt salt, copper salt, and nickel salt to form complexes. When formamide meets a strong dehydrating agent such as phosphorus pentoxide, it can generate hydrogen cyanide. It can react with phosphorus pentasulfide to form sulfur formamide. Formamide can strongly corrode copper, brass, lead, and rubber, so it should be paid attention to during storage and transportation.
Formamide Use
- Formamide has lively reactivity and special solubility, can be used as a raw material for organic synthesis, a paper treatment agent, a softener for the fiber industry, a softener for animal glue, and also used as an analytical reagent to determine the amino acid content in rice. In organic synthesis, the majority of uses in medicine, pesticides, dyes, pigments, spices, and additives also have many uses.
- It is used as an intermediate to synthesize imidazole, pyrimidine, 1,3,5-triazine, caffeine, theophylline, and theobromine. Used as a raw material for dyestuffs, fragrances, pigments, adhesives, textile auxiliaries, and paper treatments. Raw material for the production of formic acid and dimethylformamide.
- Formamide is also an excellent organic solvent, mainly used in the spinning of acrylonitrile copolymers and ion exchange resins, as well as anti-static coating or conductive coating of plastic products.
