What is Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)?

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a kind of sulfur-containing organic compound, the molecular formula is C2H6OS, at room temperature is colorless odorless transparent liquid, is a kind of hygrometric flammable liquid. With high polarity, high boiling point, good thermal stability, aprotic, and water miscible characteristics, can dissolve in ethanol, propanol, benzene and chloroform and other most organic matter, known as the "universal solvent".

Dimethyl Sulfoxide DMSO Uses

Medical Uses:
Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is used to treat bladder inflammation (interstitial cystitis), limb pain after injury (complex regional pain syndrome), and extravasation, which is the leakage of intravenous (IV) drugs into surrounding skin and tissue.

Industrial and Laboratory Applications:

  • Serves as a reaction medium for aromatic extraction, resin and dye processing, acrylic polymerization, and as a wire drawing solvent.
  • Functions as an organic solvent, reaction medium, and intermediate in organic synthesis.
  • Dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) is used as an analytical reagent and as a stationary phase in gas chromatography, and also as a solvent in ultraviolet spectrum analysis.
  • Can be used as an antifreezing agent.
