Diethylene glycol (DEG;CAS 111-46-6) , also known as 2,2'-oxydiethanol, has the chemical formula C₄H₁₀O₃ and CAS number 111-46-6. It is a low-toxicity compound belonging to the polyol class. At ambient temperature, it exists as a colourless, transparent, odourless viscous liquid. It exhibits hygroscopic properties and is non-corrosive, with a melting point of -10.5°C and a boiling point of 245°C. Its density is 1.118 g/mL. It is miscible with water, ethanol, acetone, and other solvents, but insoluble in diethyl ether and carbon tetrachloride.

Diethylene Glycol Use

Diethylene Glycol Solvent is primarily employed as a gas dehydrating agent and aromatic extraction solvent. It finds application in synthesising unsaturated polyester resins, plasticisers, and in the dissolution processing of nitrocellulose and fats. As a by-product of ethylene oxide hydration to produce ethylene glycol, it can be refined via vacuum distillation.
