Xylene (CAS 1330-20-7) refers to a group of three closely related isomers-compounds with the same chemical formula (C₈H₁₀) but different structures. These three types are ortho-xylene (o-xylene), meta-xylene (m-xylene), and para-xylene (p-xylene), distinguished by the positions of two methyl groups attached to a benzene ring.
1. Ortho-xylene (o-xylene, CAS 95-47-6)
- Structure: The two methyl groups are adjacent (1,2 positions) on the benzene ring, with no space between them.
- Properties: A colorless liquid with a sweet odor, boiling at 144°C-higher than the other two isomers. It's slightly denser and less volatile than m- or p-xylene.
- Uses: Primarily converted into phthalic anhydride, a key ingredient in plasticizers (to make plastics flexible), dyes, and polyester resins. It's also used as a solvent in some industrial processes.
2. Meta-xylene (m-xylene, CAS 108-38-3)
- Structure: The methyl groups are separated by one carbon atom (1,3 positions) on the benzene ring.
- Properties: A colorless liquid with a similar sweet odor, boiling at 139°C. It's more volatile than o-xylene and is the most abundant isomer in natural xylene mixtures.
- Uses: Mainly used to produce isophthalic acid, which is used in polyester resins for fiberglass, food packaging, and plastic bottles. It also acts as a solvent in paints, inks, and cleaning agents.

3. Para-xylene (p-xylene, CAS 106-42-3)
- Structure: The methyl groups are opposite each other (1,4 positions) on the benzene ring, giving it a symmetrical shape.
- Properties: A colorless liquid with a sweet odor, boiling at 138°C. It has the highest melting point (13.2°C) among the three, meaning it solidifies more easily in cold conditions.
- Uses: Almost exclusively used to make terephthalic acid, a critical component in PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastics-found in water bottles, polyester fabrics, and food containers. Its symmetry ensures consistent quality in PET production.
All three xylenes are volatile, insoluble in water, and soluble in organic solvents. While they share similar basic properties, their structural differences lead to distinct industrial applications, making each isomer valuable in specific manufacturing processes.
