Phenol, also known as carbolic acid, is named after carbolic acid-a byproduct of coal tar distillation. It was first discovered to possess weak acidity and bactericidal properties, and is derived from coal.
What are the properties of phenol?
Phenols are much similar to alcohols but form much stronger hydrogen bonds than the alcohols. Hence, they are more soluble in water than alcohols and have a higher boiling point. Phenols occur in either the form of colourless liquids or white solids at room temperature and can be highly toxic and caustic in nature.
Why is phenol insoluble in water?
Because of large non-polar hydrocarbon part ( - C 6 H 5 ) , phenol is less soluble in water.
