Licochalcone A is a chalconoid, a type of natural phenol. It can be isolated from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra (liquorice) or Glycyrrhiza inflata. It shows antimalarial, anticancer, antibacterial and antiviral (specifically against influenza neuraminidase) properties in vitro.
What Is Licochalcone A?
Yellow needle-like crystals, insoluble in water, soluble in ether, chloroform, etc., inhibiting monoamine oxidase, inhibiting aldose reductase, eliminating free radicals, and anti-oxidation. Inhibit the formation of melanin, the whitening effect is better than arbutin, especially for acne (acne).

What are the effects of Licochalcone A?
Anti-Aging:
A study conducted by a Chinese research team examined the potential anti-aging effects of LA (likely referring to a specific compound, such as LA) on adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs). The researchers used several methods, including β-galactosidase staining, reactive oxygen species measurement, and analysis of telomere length and mRNA expression of P16ink4a, to assess the effects. They also evaluated osteogenesis and adipogenesis using Alizarin Red and Oil Red O staining, respectively. Results indicated that LA activated glycolysis in ADSCs, suggesting it may help counteract aging by stimulating metabolic pathways.
Anti-Plasmodium:
Plasmodium parasites, responsible for diseases like malaria, pose significant health risks, particularly Plasmodium falciparum, which causes the most severe form of malaria. This parasite has high infection and fatality rates, making it a major concern in regions such as Asia and Africa. The increasing movement of populations and the continued influx of infections from abroad have contributed to rising malaria cases. Malaria remains a critical public health issue in many parts of the world.
