What are the applications of TEG (CAS 112-27-6)?

Triethylene Glycol (TEG) is a colorless, odorless, sweet-tasting viscous liquid, belonging to the polyol class of compounds. Its molecular structure contains three ethylene glycol units, exhibiting good water solubility, hygroscopicity, and chemical stability. Based on these properties, it has wide applications in various industrial fields and daily life. Specific uses can be categorized as follows:

Main Application: Dehydrating Agent in Natural Gas and Oil Extraction

In the extraction and processing of natural gas and crude oil, the feed gas typically contains a large amount of moisture (free water and water vapor). If not removed, this can lead to pipeline corrosion, hydrate formation that clogs pipelines, or affect the quality of subsequent processed products.

TEG, due to its strong hygroscopicity and high boiling point (approximately 288°C), is the preferred solvent for natural gas dehydration.

Chemical Industry: Synthetic Raw Materials and Solvents

Synthetic Resins and Rubber

TEG as a Plasticizer Raw Material: Ester compounds (such as triethylene glycol dibenzoate) formed by the reaction with organic acids are excellent plasticizers for resins such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyurethane, improving the flexibility, cold resistance, and processability of the products.

Synthetic Unsaturated Polyester Resins: Participating in resin polymerization reactions, it can adjust the viscosity, chemical resistance, and mechanical properties of the resin, used in the manufacture of fiberglass, coatings, etc.

Solvents and Extractants

Due to its good solubility and stability, TEG can be used as a solvent or co-solvent in printing inks, dyes, and coatings, helping to disperse solid components and adjust system viscosity.

Used as an extractant in essential oil extraction and the separation of certain organic compounds, utilizing its solubility selectivity for specific substances to achieve separation and purification.

Synthetic Other Chemicals: It can be used to prepare triethylene glycol monoethers (such as triethylene glycol methyl ether, a commonly used polar solvent), surfactants, etc.

Textile and Paper Industries: Moisturizing and Finishing Agents

Textile Auxiliaries: Added as a moisturizer and softener to textile sizing or finishing agents, it maintains the moisture balance of fibers and fabrics, preventing brittleness due to drying during processing or storage, while improving the hand feel and luster of the fabric.

Paper Industry: Adding a small amount of triethylene glycol to paper production can improve paper flexibility, tear strength, and reduce shrinkage and deformation during drying; it can also be used as a component of paper coatings to improve coating leveling properties.

Other Auxiliary Uses

  • Antifreeze and Coolant: Similar to ethylene glycol, Triethylene Glycol (TEG) lowers the freezing point of water and has a higher boiling point and lower volatility, making it suitable as a component of high-performance antifreeze, engine coolant, or heat transfer media in solar energy systems, applicable to applications requiring high stability.
  • Air Purification: In air conditioning systems, its hygroscopic properties can be used to remove moisture from the air for humidification or dehumidification; it can also be used to remove certain acidic gases from industrial waste gases.
  • Ink and dye: As a cosolvent and stabilizer for dyes, Triethylene Glycol (TEG) can improve the solubility of dyes in aqueous solutions, prevent precipitation during the dyeing process, and ensure uniform color.
