Bisphenol AF (CAS 1478-61-1), also known as hexafluorobisphenol A, is a fluorinated derivative of bisphenol. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder with a high melting point of around 160-163°C. It is sparingly soluble in water but dissolves well in organic solvents like acetone, ethanol, and ether. Its chemical structure includes two phenol groups linked by a carbon atom, with six fluorine atoms attached to the benzene rings, giving it excellent heat resistance, chemical stability, and low reactivity compared to non-fluorinated bisphenols.
1. Fluorinated Elastomers Production
One of its primary uses is in making fluorinated elastomers, such as FKM (fluorocarbon rubber). Bisphenol AF acts as a cross-linking agent, helping form strong chemical bonds between polymer chains. This results in elastomers that can withstand extreme temperatures (-20°C to 200°C+), harsh chemicals (like acids and oils), and high pressure. These materials are widely used in seals, gaskets, and hoses in industries like automotive, aerospace, and chemical processing, where durability under tough conditions is critical.
2. Electrical and Electronic Components
Its excellent electrical insulation properties and resistance to heat and moisture make it useful in electrical applications. It is used in the production of insulating materials for wires, cables, and connectors, ensuring reliable performance even in high-temperature environments. Additionally, it can be found in printed circuit boards (PCBs) and semiconductor components, where its chemical stability prevents degradation from exposure to coolants or cleaning agents.

3. Medical Devices
Bisphenol AF is used in manufacturing certain medical devices that require high purity and resistance to sterilization processes. For example, it is used in gaskets and seals for autoclaves (high-pressure steam sterilizers) and in components of medical pumps. Its ability to withstand repeated exposure to steam, chemicals, and high temperatures ensures these devices remain safe and functional for long periods.
4. Other Industrial Uses
It is also employed in the production of fluorinated plastics and coatings, where it enhances heat and chemical resistance. These coatings are used on metal surfaces in chemical reactors, pipelines, and industrial equipment to prevent corrosion. Additionally, bisphenol AF can be used as a monomer in specialty polymers, contributing to their mechanical strength and stability in demanding applications.
