What Is DMEA?

N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA, CAS 108-01-0, molecular formula C4H11NO) is an organic compound containing both a tertiary amino group and a hydroxyl group, which gives it the chemical properties of both alcohols and amines. It is a colorless liquid with a mild amine odor, miscible with water and with a variety of organic solvents such as ether, acetone and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Chemical Properties

The DMEA molecule contains a hydroxyl group and an amino group, so it has the chemical properties of alcohols and amines. It can react with acids to form salts, and can react with aldehydes and ketones to form Schiff bases. In addition, DMEA can undergo a variety of organic synthesis reactions, such as alkylation, acylation and halogenation.

2. Applications of DMEA

Resin raw materials: DMEA can be used as a resin raw material and participates in the synthesis and processing of resins.

Raw materials for medicines, dyes and paint solvents: DMEA is used to synthesize various pharmaceutical intermediates, dyes and paint components, and as a paint solvent component.

Paint preparation: DMEA can be used to prepare water-dilutable paints, improving the performance and quality of paints (it neutralizes the acid groups of waterborne resins and provides cross-linking sites).

Polyurethane foam catalyst: in polyurethane foam production, DMEA can be used as an auxiliary catalyst and reactive catalyst in the synthesis and foaming process. It has low catalytic activity but has little effect on foam rise and gel reaction, and can effectively neutralize trace acids in the foaming components, maintaining the stability of other organic amines in the system. DMEA is relatively cheap and is particularly advantageous when used in combination with triethylenediamine, reducing production costs.

Other applications: synthesis of bis(dimethylaminoethyl) ether, antistatic agents, soil conditioners, conductive materials, paper additives and flocculants; it can also be used as a water treatment agent to prevent boiler corrosion.
