O-Xylene is not the same as Xylene. There are three types of xylene: meta-xylene (CAS108-38-3), ortho-xylene (CAS95-47-6), and para-xylene (CAS106-42-3). Because they have the same molecular formula, they are called isomers.
O-Xylene

There are many differences between O-Xylene and Xylene, as follows:
Molecular structure
- Xylene: including o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene, the relative positions of the two methyl groups in the molecule are different, among which the two methyl groups of o-xylene are adjacent, the two methyl groups of m-xylene are separated by a carbon atom, and the two methyl groups of p-xylene are in relative positions on the benzene ring.
- o-Xylene: The two methyl groups in the molecular structure are directly connected to the benzene ring and adjacent, with a specific spatial configuration.
Physical properties
- Xylene: The properties of the mixture will vary depending on the proportions of the three isomers. It is generally a colorless, transparent liquid with a special odor, a lower density than water, insoluble in water, and easily soluble in organic solvents.
- o-Xylene: It is a colorless, transparent liquid with a toluene-like odor. Relative density 0.879, melting point - 25.5℃, boiling point 144.4℃, flash point 30℃.
Chemical properties
- Xylene: Due to the differences in the structures of the three isomers, the chemical properties are also different, but they can all undergo substitution reactions and oxidation reactions on the benzene ring.
- Ortho-xylene: The chemical properties are relatively active, and it can undergo substitution reactions such as halogenation, nitration, and sulfonation. Under certain conditions, it can be oxidized to produce phthalic acid, etc.
Uses
- Xylene: As a solvent, it is widely used in coatings, resins, inks, adhesives and other industries. It is also an important chemical raw material for the production of terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, etc., and then for the manufacture of polyester fibers, plastics, etc.
- Ortho-xylene: It is mainly used to produce phthalic anhydride, and then used to manufacture plasticizers, coatings, polyester resins, etc. It can also be used as a solvent and diluent.
