Sodium methoxide (CAS No. 124-41-4), also known as methoxysodium, is a white hygroscopic powder at room temperature. It is highly soluble in organic solvents such as methanol and ethanol and reacts violently with water to produce methanol and sodium hydroxide. The compound has a molecular formula of CH₃NaO, a molecular weight of 54.02, a melting point of -98°C, a boiling point of 65°C, and a density of 0.97 g/mL at 20°C.
Commercially available in two forms-liquid (e.g., 28%-30% methanol solution) and solid (99% purity)-sodium methoxide catalyst is synthesized through the reaction of metallic sodium with methanol. It finds extensive use in the fine chemical industry.
