Uses
Industry and Materials Science
Phenol is the core raw material for the production of phenolic resins and is widely used in the manufacture of insulating materials, adhesives, coatings, and laminates. It can also be used as a selective extraction solvent for lubricating oil refining to remove impurities from petroleum.
Medicine and disinfection
Aqueous solutions or ointments of low-concentration phenol (1%–2%) can be used as local anesthetics and disinfectants for skin itch relief, otitis media treatment, and instrument disinfection.

Phenol is highly corrosive to the skin and mucous membranes, and may cause burns or chemical burns after contact. Inhalation of its vapor can irritate the respiratory tract, causing symptoms such as headaches and pulmonary edema; ingestion may damage the digestive tract and cause acute renal failure. Long-term exposure may damage liver and kidney function. Protective equipment (such as acid-resistant gloves and goggles) must be worn during operation, and the operation must be carried out in a ventilated environment. Leakage treatment must be absorbed with sand or inert materials to avoid direct discharge into the water.
