Properties:

Appearance: 4-Chloro-3-nitrobenzoic Acid is a white crystalline solid.
Solubility: Low solubility in water, high solubility in organic solvents such as alcohols, ethers and ketones.
The compound reacts with sodium hydroxide to form 4-chloro-3-nitrophenolate. It also reacts with hydrogen chloride to form 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzoyl chloride. 4-Chloro-3-nitrobenzoic Acid is able to block protein synthesis in liver cells. This may be because it binds to copper ions and forms a complex, thereby blocking the activity of copper enzymes. The compound may also react with sodium salts to form solids when exposed to heat or light.

Uses:
- 4-Chloro-3-nitrobenzoic acid can be used as an intermediate for pigments and dyes.
- It can also be used in organic synthesis reactions such as esterification and substitution reactions.

Preparation:
- Organic synthesis intermediate is usually obtained by photocatalytic chlorine substitution reaction of p-nitrobenzoic acid with phosphoryl chloride (POCl3) and stannous chloride (SnCl2).
