Ethyl 2-(triphenylphosphoranylidene)propionate is used as a Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reagent in pharmaceutical synthesis to construct carbon-carbon double bonds, such as reacting with aldehydes to form α,β-unsaturated esters, which is a key step in the synthesis of cardiovascular drugs (such as lipid-lowering drugs) and cephalosporin antibiotics (such as cefixime). In addition, it is involved in the synthesis of isomers of maleamide E, which has the activity of inhibiting ion channels.
