1-Octadecanethiol is a long-chain aliphatic thiol with a strong odor, also known as Octadecanethiol, with a molecular formula of C₁₈H₃₈S and a relative molecular mass of 286.56. It is a white or light yellow waxy solid or paste at room temperature with a typical thiol odor. Its melting point is about 37–40°C, its boiling point is high, it is difficult to volatilize, and it is insoluble in water, but soluble in most organic solvents such as alcohol, ether and chloroform. Because the molecule contains active thiol (-SH) groups, it has good chemical reactivity and can react with metals, olefins, etc. It is often used as a chain transfer agent in chemical modifications, antioxidants, and polymerization reactions.
