Purine appears as a colorless to light yellow crystalline powder with a melting point of 214–217°C. It is slightly soluble in water (400 mg/L at 20°C) but readily dissolves in hot water, ethanol, and alkaline solutions. With a pKa value of 2.3 at 20°C, it protonates to form salts under acidic conditions.
