Indene (CAS 95-13-6) is an organic compound with a molecular formula of C₉H₈ and a molecular weight of 116.16 g/mol. It consists of a benzene ring and a cyclopentadiene ring fused via two adjacent carbon atoms, forming a non-benzenoid aromatic structure.
Indene is colorless at room temperature but turns yellow upon oxidation, with a melting point of −5–−3 °C, boiling point of 181–182 °C, density of 0.996 g/mL (25 °C), and flash point of 58 °C. It is insoluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and benzene, with slight solubility in hot water.

Uses
Polymer materials: Indene is copolymerized with coumarone to form coumarone-indene resin, which is used as a rubber tackifier, coating film former, and asphalt modifier.
Organic synthesis: As an intermediate to synthesize heterocyclic compounds such as indigo, medicines (such as antiviral drugs), and benzofulvene.
Solvents and additives: Mixed with other hydrocarbons as paint solvents, and high-temperature polymerization products can be used as lubricant additives.
Safety Information
Indene is harmful if inhaled or in contact with the skin, and may cause chemical pneumonia. Long-term exposure damages liver and kidney function. The occupational exposure limit is TWA 10 ppm (45 mg/m³) (ACGIH). Storage needs to be sealed and protected from light, placed in a cool place at 2~8°C, away from oxidants, and transported as flammable liquids (UN 3295).
