Polyglycolide typically exists as a white powder or solid at room temperature, featuring a density of approximately 1.416 g/cm³, melting point range of 200–220°C, excellent thermal stability (service temperature >200°C), and solubility characteristics: slightly soluble in water but highly soluble in organic solvents such as hexafluoroisopropanol and benzene. The material undergoes hydrolytic degradation to glycolic acid, which ultimately metabolizes into water and carbon dioxide. Degradation kinetics can be tailored by adjusting molecular weight and copolymer composition, with loss of mechanical integrity typically occurring within 5–7 days.
