Methylene Dithiocyanate (CAS No.: 6317-18-6), also known as Methylene bis(thiocyanate) or MBT, is a sulfur-containing organic compound with a molecular formula of C₃H₂N₂S₂ and a molecular weight of 130.19. It appears as a colorless to light yellow needle-shaped crystal with a melting point of 103–106°C, a boiling point of 285.2°C, and a density of 1.403 g/cm³. It is insoluble in water but slightly soluble in organic solvents.
Sterilizer Methylene Dithiocyanate exhibits broad-spectrum bactericidal and algaecidal activity by inhibiting electron transfer in the microbial respiratory system. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, algae, and protozoa, particularly sulfate-reducing bacteria. Its aqueous solution remains stable at pH 6–7 but hydrolyzes into thiocyanate, formaldehyde, and sulfide when the pH exceeds 8.
