Its molecular formula is C5H12NO3PS2, and its molecular weight is about 229.26 g/mol. Dimethoate appears as a white crystalline solid with a camphor-like odor. It has a melting point of 52-52.5°C, a boiling point of 310.3°C (at 760 mmHg), a density of 1.4 g/cm³, and a flash point of 141.4°C (closed-cup). It is sparingly soluble in water (2.5 g/100 mL at 25°C) and readily soluble in most organic solvents such as acetone and methanol. It remains stable under acidic conditions but readily decomposes when exposed to strong alkali or high temperatures. The decomposition products contain toxic sulfur and phosphorus oxides.
