N,N-Dimethyl-n-octadecylamine is an important organic synthesis intermediate for quaternary ammonium salt cationic surfactants.
It can react with ethylene oxide, dimethyl sulfate, diethyl sulfate, methyl chloride, benzyl chloride, etc. to generate different quaternary ammonium salt cations, which are used in fabric softening, antistatic agents, and improving hair combing properties.
It is used to produce insect repellents. It reacts with ethylene oxide and nitric acid to produce octadecyl dimethyl hydroxyethyl quaternary ammonium nitrate, i.e. antistatic agent SN.
