The substance with CAS number 1191-43-1 is 1,6-Hexanedithiol, also known as Hexane-1,6-dithiol. Its molecular formula is C₆H₁₄S₂, and its molecular weight is 150.30536. It appears as a colorless to slightly yellow transparent liquid, is insoluble in water, and is miscible with oils and fats.
Preparation Method
1,6-Hexanedithiol is synthesized by stirring and heating 1 mol of α,ω-hexanediol with 2 mol of thiourea and 3 mol of 48% hydrobromic acid under reflux until dehydration occurs. After condensation, 3 mol of aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (~1.2 L) is added, and the mixture is refluxed to hydrolyze into the sodium salt. The aqueous layer is separated, acidified, and extracted with ether. The combined ether layers are washed, dried, and distilled to obtain the final product.
