3-Chloro-2-hydroxypropanesulfonic acid sodium salt is used for preparing surfactants, modified starch, drilling fluid filtration control materials, psychotropic drug APIs, etc. Under alkaline conditions, it can undergo an etherification reaction with starch to obtain a starch derivative containing a sulfonic acid group, 2-hydroxy-3-sodium sulfonate propyl starch ether, which is an excellent drilling fluid filtration control material. It can undergo an alkylation reaction with amide to obtain amphoteric surfactants containing a sulfonic acid group. These surfactants are resistant to temperature and salt and have high activity.
