Benzalkonium Chloride
Product Introduction
The compound corresponding to CAS 63449-41-2 is benzalkonium chloride, also known as dodecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride, a cationic surfactant comprising a mixture of quaternary ammonium salts with alkyl chain lengths typically ranging from C₁₂ to C₁₈.
Benzalkonium chloride appears as a colorless-to-light-yellow transparent liquid or white powder, highly soluble in water, methanol, and ethanol, and insoluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene. Its aqueous solution is weakly alkaline (pH 6.5–7.0). As a quaternary ammonium salt, its molecular structure incorporates benzyl, dimethyl, and long-chain alkyl groups, with a general formula of CₙH₂ₙ₊₁CH₂N(CH₃)₂C₆H₅·Cl (e.g., C₁₉H₃₄ClN for C₁₂ alkyl chain, molecular weight 319.93 g/mol).

Properties And Uses
Properties:
1. This compound is easily soluble in water, ethanol and other polar solvents and may have a slight aromatic odor.
2. It is stable at room temperature, but may decompose under strong acid or alkali conditions.
3. It has good surface activity and can reduce the surface tension of liquids.
Uses:
Benzalkonium chloride is used for disinfection and surface activity applications:
It serves as a broad-spectrum bactericide in medical and healthcare settings, capable of killing Gram-positive/negative bacteria, fungi, and algae. Applications include surgical instrument disinfection, skin/mucosal antisepsis, and water treatment systems to control microbial growth. In daily chemical products, it is added to shampoos and conditioners as an antistatic agent and softener and used in wet wipes and hand sanitizers as a preservative. In industrial applications, it functions as a leveling agent in textiles, water injection bactericide in oil fields, and paper softener in papermaking.

Precautions
Toxicity:
Oral LD₅₀ in rats = 400 mg/kg (high concentrations are highly irritating to the skin and eyes).
It is extremely toxic to aquatic organisms (R50), and water pollution should be avoided.
Protection: Wear gloves and goggles during operation to avoid direct contact.
Storage: Store sealed in a cool and dry place, away from strong alkalis and oxidants.
