Iron(III) Phosphate Dihydrate

Properties And Uses

Properties:

1. When heated, it loses crystal water and turns into anhydrous substances, and decomposition reaction occurs at the same time. It decomposes into iron orthophosphate (FePO₄) and water vapor above 400°C.
2. It can react with alkali to generate corresponding acidic salts, such as sodium iron orthophosphate (NaFePO₄) when reacting with sodium hydroxide.
3. Crystal structure: It belongs to the monoclinic system and has a fixed spatial arrangement. Its crystal structure contains water molecules, which interact with ions through hydrogen bonds.

Uses:

Food and medicine: Iron(III) Phosphate Dihydrate is used as an iron nutritional enhancer and is added to egg products, rice products and nutritional supplements to supplement the iron required by the human body.
Materials science: As a precursor of lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄), a positive electrode material for lithium batteries, it is synthesized by high-temperature solid phase method or hydrothermal method, and has high safety and cycle stability.

Catalytic application: catalyzes the Biginelli reaction (synthesis of dihydropyrimidone compounds) and oxidative dehydrogenation reactions (such as the preparation of methyl methacrylate from methyl isobutyric acid) in organic synthesis.
