PHMB, also known as polyhexanide, is a linear polymer consisting of cationic biguanide groups connected by hexamethylene chains with the chemical formula (C8H17N5)n. xHCl, n ≤ 40. This compound is synthesized as a heterodisperse mixture of polymers with molecular weights ranging from 500 to 6000 g/mol.

Applications of Polyhexamethylene biguanide hydrochloride (PHMB)
Due to its superb antibacterial activity, chemical stability, low toxicity, and reasonable cost, PHMB has been widely used in a wide variety of fields, including swimming pool sanitizers, preservatives for cosmetics, the food industry, contact lens solutions, textile goods, and ect.
Disinfectant and Sanitizer:
Healthcare Settings: PHMB is widely used as a disinfectant for surfaces, medical instruments, and facilities because it is effective against a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, and some viruses.
Consumer Products: It is also present in various household disinfectants and sanitizing sprays, providing long-lasting antimicrobial protection.
Textile and Surface Treatments:
PHMB is used to treat textiles and surfaces, including hospital fabrics, protective equipment, and air filters, to provide an antimicrobial barrier. This is especially valuable in settings requiring high levels of hygiene, such as hospitals, hotels, and food processing facilities.
Contact Lens Solutions:
PHMB is included in some contact lens cleaning solutions as a preservative and disinfectant. Its inclusion helps control microbial contamination and ensures lens safety for prolonged use.
