Production of Difluoroacetic Acid
Difluoroacetic Acid is an extremely strong acid that can be completely dissociated in water and is a colourless liquid with a pungent odour. It is also a strong oxidising agent, capable of reacting with many organic and inorganic substances, and is highly volatile, evaporating at room temperature.
It can be used as a catalyst and solvent in polymerisation reactions as well as in cleaning and degreasing processes, e.g. cleaning of metal surfaces.
Production
Direct Fluorination of Acetic Acid Derivatives:
Chlorination and Fluorination: One common approach is to start with acetic acid and react it with chlorine to form monochloroacetic acid. Then, this intermediate is treated with a fluorinating agent (like HF) to replace the chlorine atoms with fluorine atoms, yielding difluoroacetic acid.
Fluorination of Malonic Acid or Derivatives:
Malonic acid derivatives can undergo selective fluorination to yield difluoroacetic acid. In this method, fluorinating reagents (such as diethylaminosulfur trifluoride or DAST) are used to replace hydrogen atoms with fluorine atoms. Further oxidation or decarboxylation steps may be required to convert the intermediates to difluoroacetic acid.
Direct Fluorination Using Select Fluorinating Agents:
Some specific reagents, like xenon difluoride (XeF₂) or other fluorination reagents, can directly fluorinate acetic acid derivatives.
