Key Differences

Feature TEG (CAS 112-27-6) DEG (CAS 111-46-6)
Safety Low toxicity (safe for cosmetics) Toxic if ingested (banned in medicines)
Boiling Point Higher (285°C) Lower (245°C)
Viscosity Thicker Thinner
Regulations Generally unrestricted Restricted in consumer products

TEG (CAS 112-27-6)

TEG (triethylene glycol) is a colorless, odorless, and thick liquid, a bit like syrup. Thanks to its high boiling point of around 285°C, it remains stable even in warm conditions. It mixes well with water, making it useful in many industries. In the natural gas business, TEG is a star worker, drying out the gas by absorbing water vapor, which protects pipelines from rust and blockages. It's also found in air - conditioning systems to control humidity and in beauty products to keep skin moisturized.

DEG (diethylene glycol) also colorless and odorless but has a lower boiling point at about 245°C. It soaks up moisture from the air like a sponge and is more reactive in chemical reactions. In the manufacturing world, DEG acts as a helper in paints, inks, and glues, helping all the ingredients blend together. It's added to plastics to make them bendy and flexible, and it's an important part of car antifreeze to keep engines from freezing in cold weather.

DEG (CAS 111-46-6)

Safety is where the biggest difference lies. TEG is relatively safe; getting it on your skin might cause a little redness, but that's usually it. DEG, however, is much more dangerous. If swallowed or exposed to in large amounts, it can seriously harm your kidneys and liver.
